Welling has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. His retrospective exhibition James Welling Photographs, 1974-1999, originated at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio and traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Solo exhibitions include Regen Projects, Los Angeles; David Zwirner, New York; Maureen Paley, London; Galerie Nelson-Freeman, Paris; Wako Works of Art, Tokyo; Donald Young, Chicago, and Galerie Nächst St .Stephan, Vienna. In 2006, Agricultural Works, a collaborative project of photographs and music by the artist's brother Will Welling, opened at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY.

Recently Welling's work has also been included in the following group exhibitions: The Pictures Generation, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the 2008 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Los Angeles 1955-1985, Centre Pompidou, Paris; The 80's: A Topology, Museu Serralves, Porto, Portugal; Tomorrowland, Cal Arts in Moving Pictures, Museum of Modern Art, New York; Éblouissement, Jeu de Paume, Paris; and The Last Picture Show: Artists Using Photography, 1960-82, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.

Welling's books include Flowers (2006); James Welling Photographs 1974-99 (2000); Light Sources (1996); Wolfsburg (1994); Usines de Dentelle (1993); and Les Voies Ferrées/St. Etienne et La Plaine du Forez (1990); In 2004, Welling produced the feature film Easy which screened in Dramatic Competition at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
